Richard Attenborough's multiple Oscar-winning masterpiece comes repeatedly to mind, and while Viceroy's House doesn't have the epic sweep of Gandhi, it's shorter, less demanding and more entertaining.

In 1947, British statesman Lord Mountbatten (Hugh Bonneville) assumes the post of India's last Viceroy with his wife Edwina (Gillian Anderson), living upstairs at the house which was the home of British rulers, while 500 Hindu, Muslim and Sikh servants live downstairs. He is charged with overseeing the country's transition from British rule to independence.
